We slept in a bit this morning and had a late breakfast at a local joint called Walter’s Coffee Shop. Great little locally owned family restaurant. Our waitress Kim asked where we were headed, so we shared our story and one of our trading cards. Pretty soon, here comes another waitress, Tiffany..a fellow Steelers fan. Then Kim introduced us to the cook’s Adam (Walter’s grandson) and Kenny (Walter’s nephew)..the new generation working the business to take it over one day. Adam is a former Marine…thanks for your service Adam! Next, here came the owner, Grace. She is a fellow motorcycle rider and also Walter’s daughter. What a great family legacy! The food was great, the atmosphere was “electric” and the staff absolutely treated us like Walter would, his motto was “where the elite eat”.
Today we had originally planned to drive highway 1 up the Florida coast….two things changed that plan.
- It’s Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend and that route was going to take 3 hours longer
- Rain storms all along the coast where Tropical Depression Bonnie was stirring up lots of moisture
Our trip north along the scenic by-ways of Lake Okeechobee and the Martin Highway were quite pleasant. We saw lots of motorcycle traffic along the way.
At one point it looked like we were going to get very wet…we found a little shelter near a correctional facility…looked like a shelter for the staff’s kids to wait for their bus. We ducked in there and donned our rain gear…it was for naught…rain threatened, but we stayed dry at least on the outside…we were sweating like crazy under that rain gear!
We made it to Port St. Lucie, got settled into the hotel and finished up our laundry for the week.
