We had an early start to try and beat some of the heat and the potential tropical depression that was predicted to bring some afternoon showers. We had a few sprinkles as we left the hotel and made a quick fuel stop. Off to the keys we went…it was starting to look ominous as we pulled into Key Largo. We had a breakfast stop picked out on Key Largo, we arrived at Harriette’s just as the rain started. Perfect timing! A great breakfast and by the time we were ready to head out the rain had moved on.
We are back on the road and then…the drawbridge comes up at Islamorada….patiently waiting (aka sweating our butts off) to get moving again.
On we go…for the most part traffic moved along at a decent pace. The temperatures continued to soar…into the upper 90’s with 80-90% humidity. Ick! Beautiful views, but the heat and humidity had us stopping frequently for water/air conditioning breaks. We stopped south of Islamorada to find a geocache called “Where are you from?”.
When we got to Key West we were in serious need of some “cool down” time. We found a nice little place to have some ice tea and air conditioning. The Sippin Key West Coffee House and Internet Cafe. The proprietors Michael, Sean, Gary and their awesome dog JD made us feel right at home. We hung out for a couple of hours and did our blog for Day 16. Visited with lots of folks interested in the Spyder. Chet even tried the “true iced coffee” they make at the shop…he doesn’t normally care for iced coffee, but said this was excellent!
Alright…time to go take the mandatory picture at the southern most point. Wow! There were at least 100 people waiting in line to take pictures…hmmm…it’s almost 100 degrees with 90+% humidity…looks like a perfect opportunity for a drive-by photo! We drove around a bit checking out Key West, then stopped to take a few photos by the water. Time to head back north.
We were lucky on the way back…there was a boat waiting for the draw bridge to go up. We got across just before they stopped traffic. The traffic headed south was backed up for 4 1/2 miles waiting for the draw bridge!
We had to make a quick stop in Islamorada to visit Betsey the Lobster. Chet’s worst nightmare!
Do you know how hard it is to find a restaurant in the Keys that DOESN’T have crab and/or lobster on the menu???? We found a gold mine at Lucy’s in Key Largo. The owners Fred and Petra met us as we were getting off the bike…Fred was trying to convince Petra it would be a great idea for them to get one. Petra is the executive chef at the restaurant..what a fantastic cook! She is German and the menu is mainly German food with lots of variety thrown in, most importantly….no crab or lobster! Fred told us they were the only non-seafood restaurant in the Keys and the only German restaurant between Key West and Miami. Thanks Fred and Petra for a great meal!
Back to the hotel to chill out for a bit and do a load of laundry. Tomorrow is a short day…so we are looking forward to sleeping in a bit!

P.S. We noticed we had posted two Day 11 posts on the blog and two Day 10 posts on Facebook….you all should really let us know when we make a silly error like that! All is corrected now.
